In brief: It’s fun but not that well written. Never thought I’d say this but don’t bother spending time on it and watch the delightful Aidan Turner in the latest BBC version.
No, but actually, I mean it. If you’re going to indulge in pulpy nonsense, you might as well really commit to bodice-ripping and eye-candy:
Obviously, it all gets hammed up for television but it’s not like the book is a hard-hitting exploration of the economics of tin mining in late 18th century Cornwall…
The other thing the TV show has going for it is a rather excellent soundtrack.
